The Almost Uptown Poetry Cartel presents The 3rd Annual Poets’ Cruise on The Pride of the Susquehanna. We will be setting sail from City Island from 6-9PM, on the beautiful Susquehanna River.
We will start the open reading at 6:30PM hosted by Paper Sword alumni and Harrisburg’s current Poet Laureate Rick Kearns and The Cartel’s resident fire starter, Jose Morales Jr. The Grandmaster of Ceremonies, Marty Esworthy, will be introducing the featured poet, Maria James-Thiaw, at 7:30PM. A second open reading will follow our featured poet. Open reading poets will be signed up upon arrival and reading space is limited. Please, arrive early to claim your spot!
Maria James-Thiaw is the author of 3 books of poetry, a spoken word CD and the award-winning choreopoem, Reclaiming My Time: An American Griot Project. Her recent work is based on the oral histories of women throughout the country who lived through the Jim Crow era. She is a professor of writing at Central Penn College and the founder of Reclaim Artist Collective, a new organization in the Harrisburg area meant to inspire local artists through writing workshops and wellness programs and create affordable arts programs for marginalized groups and schools.

This will be a 21+ cruise. The Pride’s bar will be open and food is available before the cruise at Cafe Huey on shore.
Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the dock.
After the cruise, please join us to deconstruct the evening at Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center located at 1110 N. 3rd ST., Harrisburg, PA 17102.

Cafe Huey is located right above our docks and has an extensive menu of grilled items and other delectable treats. If you would like to order and bring aboard one of their meals, we recommend that you place an order ahead of time so that it is ready before the riverboat leaves the dock. The riverboat galley will have a limited number of packaged items for purchased during the cruise, such as pretzels and chips.
The riverboat leaves promptly on time.
The Pride is wheelchair and handicapped accessible.
This cruise is for ages 21 and older.
The riverboat sails rain or shine. In the case of unsafe sailing conditions, the captain will have the event held aboard the riverboat while docked.
Restrooms are available onboard.
